2006 Dykes Library Mission and Strategic Initiatives


Mission

The mission of the A.R. Dykes Library of the Health Sciences staff is to work collaboratively with individuals and organizations who are seeking high quality health information within the University of Kansas Medical Center and throughout the state of Kansas.

Collaboration Initiative

Goal 4: The Dykes Library staff identifies and develops collaborative services and programs with external organizations with health information needs, including but not limited to other libraries, community organizations, state and local governments, etc., in support of outreach and consumer health education.

Collaboratively build & maintain relationships based on the medical educational programs at KU Med in conjunction with Kansas City metro community needs and interests in partnering with the library to meet health literacy needs.

Activities

  • Identify 5 area agencies and 5 community organizations interested in health information (Diversity Librarian lead; all librarians)
  • Identify 5 KUMED faculty, researchers, and staff already involved in community programs and services to determine possible partnerships (Diversity Librarian and Karen lead; all librarians)
  • Work to identify 2 leaders in the community willing to assist in developing health education programs (Karen, Diversity Librarian)
  • Seek grant funding opportunities and apply for at least one each year. (all librarians)
  • Work with the diversity librarian in bi-monthly meetings in developing programs for underserved populations (all Librarians)
  • Coordinate the consumer outreach iniative with the state Librarian, Johnson County Library, KUMED faculty and researchers, and the AHECs to develop and implement a program mission and objectives. (Karen, Laura, and Thomas)
  • Assist Kansas and Kansas City metropolitan area consumers who walk in, email, send letters, or call with their requests for health information.

Dykes Library, as a Resource Library within the National Network of Libraries of Medicine's MidContinental Region, is to serve as an arm of the MidContinental Regional Medical Library of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, meeting or exceeding yearly established RML project and outreach goals.

Activities

  • Work with state and local health departments on professional development and training
    Attend at least one KDHE workforce development meeting each year (Laura)
  • Provide at least two trainings a year at a local health department (Laura)
  • Develop partnerships with Kansas Public Libraries to provide quality consumer health education
  • Continue to work with Johnson County Library and their JoCoHealth project by joining JoCoHealth. (Karen)
  • Upon the request of the JoCoHealth partners, identify other public library partners; make initial contacts and assist with proposal writing (Laura and Thomas)
  • Continue to encourage Johnson County Library to implement their database in coordination with other public libraries in Kansas for the National Go Local Iniative by attending JoCoHealth Meetings (Laura and Thomas)
  • Work with the library and KUMED to develop RML archives (D-Space) (Thomas)
  • Hold monthly meetings with KUMC Digital Lead (Thomas, Whit)
  • Develop RML Institutional Respository Policy Document. (Thomas)
  • Develop Dspace templates for Liaison use. (Tholmas)
  • Evaluate materials in Quickplace and MCR Website.
  • Transfer initial materials to RML archive.
  • Review materials in Quickplace (annual) and MCR website. (biannual).
  • Explore new educational and communication technologies (Thomas)
  • Evaluate new collaboration software.
  • Work with Sharon Dennis to establish Access Grid sites at resource libraries.
  • Maintain MCMLA-L listserv.
  • Administer and assist NNLM members with services and NNLM programs such as DOCLINE, consortia buying, etc as requested. (Thomas and Laura)
  • Conduct a combined 10 training sessions or workshops annually for health professionals, special groups, and the general public for Kansas and the Kansas City metro area. (Laura and Thomas)
  • Exhibit and promote NLM products and services to the region at a minimum of five conferences and as other opportunities present themselves (Laura and Thomas)
  • Advocate on behalf of network members as requested and with a letter annually to hospital directors from the Regional Medical Library (Network Liaison of the RML and Laura)
  • Conduct assessment and evaluation as appropriate
    a) Distribute evaluations for at least 50% of classes, workshops, and training sessions taught; report monthly to NNLM (Thomas and Laura)
