The mission of the A.R. Dykes Library of the Health Sciences staff is to work collaboratively with individuals and organizations who are seeking high quality health information within the University of Kansas Medical Center and throughout the state of Kansas.

Instruction Initative
Goal 1: The Instruction Development group will guide collaboration with KUMC departments and schools to develop instruction that is relevant in support of the ongoing curriculum.
The Instruction Development group will form and guide the Library instruction group to assist faculty and/or students in the use of library technology tools (facilities, equipment, databases, software, etc.).
Activities
- The Instruction Development group will be established by Anne Huffman, Dianne Griffin, and Deborah Kennedy.
- Instruction group will develop and maintain core instructional content in shared resource for all instruction staff. This content includes tipsheets, scripts and other learning activities for resources such as PubMed, SMART Board, Library Website, PDAs, etc. Content development will be completed by 7/31/06. Content will be reviewed and updated each April and November.
- Instruction group will train Reference Assistants to provide library orientations and basic instruction in library resource selection by 7/31/06.
- Instruction group will train Reference Assistants to provide instruction in using the following resources: Health Reference Center, MEDLINEplus, Web of Science, Smart Board, AccessMedicine, images.MD, and WorldCat. Training will be completed by 12/31/06.
- Library staff will offer at least two “power hour” classes each month. The schedule for these classes will be completed by 1/31/06.
The Instruction Development group will guide the Information Literacy group in developing an Information Literacy program.
Activities
- The Information Literacy group will be established by Anne Huffman and Deborah Kennedy.
- The Information Literacy team will present a concept proposal that describes and defines Information Literacy at KUMC, to be presented to the librarians for review, by 3/31/06.
- The Information Literacy team will develop an instructional proposal to be presented to the librarians for review, by 4/30/06.
- Upon acceptance by the librarians, the proposals will be presented to the Library Faculty Committee for review, by 5/31/06.
The Instruction Development group will guide the EBM instruction group in developing an EBM instruction program.
Activities
- The EBM instruction group will be established by Anne Huffman and Deborah Carman.
- The EBM instruction group will identify faculty who currently incorporate EBM concepts in the curriculum by 8/31/06.
- The EBM instruction group will define basic concepts for EBM at KUMC by 9/30/06.
- The EBM instruction group will develop teaching materials and provide instruction for library teaching staff by 12/31/06.
Librarians will serve as liaisons to the schools and departments of KUMC.
Activities
- Liaisons will interact on at least a monthly basis with one or more faculty member or students, using the mode of the liaison’s choice.
- Liaisons will participate in at least one department or faculty meeting per semester.
- Liaisons will contact department chair or faculty representative via email, phone, or in person, on a monthly basis.
Copyright and Document Delivery group will provide the resources and services necessary for KUMC scholars to comply with the US Copyright Act when using copyright protected works, and will keep KUMC scholars informed of their options for managing their own distributed works. Instruction formats will be developed for face-to-face classroom and individual instruction, and for video presentation distribution.
Activities
- CDD staff will provide instruction on KUMC copyright compliance policy and procedures at the beginning of each semester in January, June and August, and as needed.
- CDD staff will educate faculty, staff and students of their authoring and publishing options for distributing their scholarly works. Topics will include open access, Science Commons and Creative Commons, negotiating copyright with commercial publishers, among others. Instruction will be provided at the beginning of each semester in January, June and August, and as needed
- CDD Head will participate in the April 2006 student research forum by attending the SRF student and staff planning meetings as scheduled and serve as consultant on copyright issues.
- CDD Head will plan and coordinate a presentation/ panel discussion sponsored by KU and KUMC libraries on changes in scholarly communications for Spring of ’06 and/or Fall of ’06.
- CDD staff will develop and present training guides on the use of ERes. There will be a library staff version and version for faculty who will manage their own courses. A testing guide for faculty will be completed by Jan. 10, 2006. Live guides to be completed by summer session, 2006.
- CDD staff will develop and present training guides on using ILLiad. There will be a library staff version and a version for patrons. To be completed by March 15, 2006
- Upon the completion and approval of an institution-wide reserves policy, CDD will develop and present training on implementing this policy. There will be a library staff version and a faculty/student version. To be completed by Fall session, 2006.
We will provide a Testing Department that supports fair and equitable testing for the Schools of Medicine, Allied Health and Nursing. There is assessment and evaluation support through the collection and processing of test data via computer-based testing, paper-pencil testing and evaluations.
Activities
- We will maintain 100% computer operation in the testing center.
- Daily monitoring of systems and processing of help tickets as needed.
- Yearly image refreshing to maintain usability from outside sources on campus. (May and December)
Explore feasibility of expanding testing accommodations to satisfy the needs of testing all students in a course in one setting.
Activities
- Present paper proposal on expansion ideas to allow one-group testing.
- Work with the School of Medicine to explore feasibiilty of one-wave versus two-wave testing.
Integrate the paper-pencil and computer-based testing into one service department.
Activities
- Cross-training within paper-pencil testing, computer-based testing and TLT staff for backup.
- Market the CTC as an alternate location for paper-pencil testing within Board/Angel Learning.
Actively pursue becoming a member of the National College Testing Association (NCTA) or other similar industry organization.

- Explore strengths and weaknesses of each group.
- Present long-term gain from investment.
