Citation Searching
Who cited whom and what?
There are many reasons to do a citation search. Finding papers that cite an important paper may be a part of a literature search. Authors sometimes want to know how often their papers are being cited. Impact factors for journals are calculated based on the frequency that the papers published in them are cited. The following publications index articles by citation.
ISI Web of Science: 1983 to present
The ISI Web of Science provides seamless access to the Science Citation Expanded® Index, Social Sciences Citation Index®, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index™. It enables users to search current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from approximately 8,500 research journals. ISI Web of Science also provides a unique search method, cited reference searching. With it, users can navigate forward, backward, and through the literature, searching all disciplines and time spans to uncover all the information relevant to their research. ISI Web of Science is available to all KUMC affiliates.
SCI Journal Citation Reports: 1989 to present
SCI ranks journals based on various citation factors. Journals within specific subject categories are ranked by: total citations for all years, impact factor, immediacy index, source items published in a specific year, and citations in two year increments. These rankings are explained in the front of the SCI Journal Citation Reports volume for any year. Publication of Journal Citation Reports usually lags two to three years behind publication of the citation index.
Journal Citation Reports and impact factors for 1989 to the present are available on microfiche and for more recent years in a print booklet that is kept in the collection development offices of the library. The most recent data is available for electronic searching via CD-ROM. To see this information ask a reference librarian.
