EndNote is a bibliographic management software program which allows the user to create a library to manage and store citations and to export the citations from the library into a word processor to produce a bibliography or manuscript in a variety of publication styles (e.g., APA, Chicago, or journal specific).
What can I do with EndNote?
- Store and organize references in your own EndNote database library
- Import reference information from database files, servers and catalogues
- Insert citations from your EndNote library into word processing documents and create bibliographies of any format for those documents
Where can I get EndNote?
EndNote is available for purchase at the KUMed Bookstore. You can also download a free trial version from the publisher, ISI ResearchSoft.
How do I get my citations into EndNote?
You can either import the results from a database search, or enter citations manually.
How do I import search results from Dykes Library databases?
First, save the results of a search in a format EndNote can understand, then use the Import button on the toolbar to transfer the citations to an EndNote library. See the import filters page for directions on using filters with Dykes Library databases.
Can I import citations from more than one database?
Yes, just make sure you're using the appropriate filter for each database.
Will EndNote work with my word processor?
EndNote is compatible with Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, plain text, RTF, and HTML formats. You can check the compatibility of other Windows and Macintosh word processors at the ISI website.
How do I use EndNote with my word processor to create a bibliography?
If you use later versions of Microsoft Word, EndNote installs commands in Word to integrate the two programs (the "Cite While You Write" feature). Other word processor/document formats use different methods for creating a bibliography. For detailed instructions on creating a bibliography with your specific document type, consult the EndNote help text or manual.
The EndNote commands did not appear in my Tools menu in Word after I installed -- what should I do?
You can manually install the EndNote Word Add-in. Instructions are available from the ISI website.
Can I share my EndNote files with others over the Web?
You can create a web database using a program called Reference Web Poster, available from the producers of EndNote.
Are there other software programs like this available?
Yes, two of the most popular bibliographic management programs, in addition to EndNote, are Pro-Cite and Reference Manager.
