Student Technology

School of Medicine - October 5

1. What is happening with printer in the Student Center?
It will remain until the new printing system is in place. There is a new printing solution that will be implemented. Printers will initially be available in the ITC, Student Center, and 4 in the library. All printers will do color and black/white and single side or duplex. Students will set up an account with funds in it and will be able to deduct printing costs from that account. There will be no cards to have to have someone click and to determine if you have clicks. After the printers are installed and working well, photocopiers will be converted to the same system so that copy cards will NOT be needed. We’ll work with student governing groups and the Student Technology Committee to determine how to get money from cards to accounts.

2. Can the computers be programmed to not go off at 10 minutes?
Yes, but we need to realize that this then becomes a security issue. A 30 minute timeframe was suggested.

Since meeting with MSA, I discussed this issue with IT personnel in the library and personnel responsible for the network and we’ll try to find a solution that might Lock your machine after 10 minutes but NOT log off so that information is lost for 20 or 30 minutes. We will need support from the “security people”, but will do everything possible to extend this time. Will keep you posted on developments.

3. Can saved materials be kept on the temporary file?
Yes, but again it becomes a security issue since others can have access. A 24 hour timeframe was suggested.

Since the meeting with MSA, I discussed this issue with IT personnel in the library and personnel for the network. No good answers yet, but will keep you posted.

4. Discussion on moving from zip, disks, etcs. to keys.
It was noted that it is impossible to purchase "universal" zip drives. It was also noted that "keys" are the future.

The library will make a commitment that for the next 6 to maybe 18 months we’ll have a machine or few machines that can accommodate floppy disks, external zips, and some strategy for CDW. We will be transitioning to desktop PC’s that have DVD Read and USB ports (flash cards, jump sticks, memory sticks). We’ll work with the Bookstore to have removable USB sticks available for purchase in the library.

5. Performance issues were raised. It appears as if one side of the street is slower than the other. (north of 39th faster than south of 39th)

Posed this question to the IT folk and will have a response of some sort to report. Might be “I don’t know”.

6. Why is personal log in slow?
Posed this question to the IT folk and will have a response of some sort to report. Might be “I don’t know”.

7. Why is library renovation so slow?
The renovation is moving forward. The original time schedule was the renovation and remodeling of the second floor/top floor Fall 2004 (Aug – Dec) and the first floor/ground floor Spring 2005 (mid-January – June). Right now it appears we may be a bit behind schedule, but the access flooring is to arrive October 7 and then progress on the second floor will really become evident.

With the completion of second floor, EVERYTHING will be moved from first to second.

8. What is the best way to communicate with students? How should students let us know what the problems are?
Solutions: web site and IT phone number.

We’ll place this form on the Student Services web-site and link from the library web-site. I’ll also post on the window of the ERC and in the library.

9. Food Court
Something that wasn’t asked, but shared is there will be a “food court” in what was the copy center on first floor. Awaiting on information about putting a 3/8” water line in so that a coffee machine can be installed. Initially there will be vending – snacks, sodas in bottles, coffee.
