Navigation Tips:

The banner at the left of each page provides you with information and links that let you take different kinds of action. The list of options changes as you progress through the search site.

Searching:

Keyword Search:
Keyword is the default search format. To search by Keyword:

  • Type a word or phrase into the search box.
  • You may use the Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT to combine search terms and the asterisk (*) as a wildcard symbol. (i.e. breast cancer AND tamoxifen)
  • Select whether you wish to search for your keywords in just the title, citation and abstract, or within full text, where available.
  • Select any desired limits (Full text, refereed publications, specific journals, etc)
  • Click on the gray “Search” button.
  • Your chosen keyword(s) will be highlighted in red within the full citations or text.

Subject Search:
To search directly by subject, click on the “Subject Guide” option in the blue toolbar on the left side of the screen.

  • Click on the search entry box, and type a word or two. If you are typing more than one word, the most important word in the search should be typed first. (i.e. breast cancer)
  • Note - the word AND is not treated as a logical (Boolean) operator in the subject search. The words OR and NOT are treated as logical (Boolean) operators and will force a keyword search.
  • Apply limits, such as full text, refereed publications, etc, as needed
  • Click on the gray “Search” button.

Advanced Search:
The Advanced Search feature allows you to search by a particular portion of a citation, such as the author, ISSN, page number, etc.

  • From the Select Index drop down menu select the field you want to search.
  • In the text box type the term you want to search. (i.e. Generali in the author field)
  • Apply limits as needed.
  • Click on the gray “Search” button.

Combining Searches:

Return to any search screen (Keyword, Subject or Advanced) and view the

  • History box near the bottom.
  • Note the number of the searches you wish to combine. (i.e. R2, R4)
  • In the search text box, enter the searches you wish to combine. (i.e. R2 AND R4)
  • Click on the gray “Search” button.

Working with Records:

Once you have a list of citations, you can begin to work with them.

  • Citations which have a blue “abstract” link beneath them allow access to the abstract.
  • Citations which have a blue “text” beneath them provide the full text of the article.
  • Citations which have a blue “text with graphics” beneath them provide any graphics and charts in addition to the full text.
  • Mark records by clicking on its check box or "Mark" icon at a citation list page. These items are added to a list. In this way you can set references aside for later action.
  • To examine your current list at any point in the program, click on the “View Mark List” button on the left side of the page.\
  • When you are looking at an individual record, scroll all the way to the bottom and note the option to “View other articles linked to these subjects”. This can help you find other articles on a similar topic.

Printing and Emailing Records:
You may choose to print and/or email records and articles from a search, either by viewing a marked list of citations or by viewing an individual record. Scroll down to the bottom of the list or citation to see your options.

To Print:

  • Make the appropriate selections for printing the citation or full text (where available).
  • Click on “Submit Print Request” (for individual articles, select “Browser Print” or “Acrobat Reader”
  • The material will be reformatted for printing.
  • Use the print feature on your browser to print.

To Email:

  • Make the appropriate selections for emailing the citations or full text (where available)
  • Enter your full email address, including @kumc.edu or @yahoo.com etc.
  • Enter a subject, so you will recognize the mail when it arrives.
  • Click on submit email request.
